Main message: 1:46 - Today we’re going to talk about fear. Fear is one of the most often sighted road blocks to people pursuing their dreams and becoming the hero of their own story. I think it’s safe to say we have all dealt with fear at some point in our lives. The big question is, how do we deal with the fear so it doesn’t paralyze us and prevent us from pursuing our hopes and dreams? 2:15 - I am not immune to struggling with fear either. It was one of the biggest things that held me back from pursuing my dreams for years. I had a fear of failure. Fear of being wrong. Fear of looking silly. Fear of being judged by others. Fear of what others would say about me. And fear of just not being good enough. I had a serious lack of self-confidence. 2:44 - So again, how to do we overcome it, and get past it so we can live the heroic life we were meant to? 3:00 - Tony relives a recent incident at a popular bookstore. 7:59 - If we are going to overcome our fear, we have to employ a four step strategy. 8:14 - The first thing we have to do to get past our fear is to acknowledge that it exists. We have to be honest with ourselves with ourselves here. We have to be honest with ourselves and say, “Yes, I am afraid. I’m afraid of being wrong. I’m afraid of people judging me. I’m afraid of failing. I’m afraid of not being good enough. I am afraid. 8:45 - Now, some might ask, “If we acknowledge it, if we say the words, if we admit that we’re afraid, won’t we give the fear more power in our lives?” I don’t think it does. In fact when has sticking your head in the sand and pretending a problem wasn’t real EVER caused it to go away? When you pretend it doesn’t exist, when you act like everything is fine and refuse to acknowledge there is a problem, that’s when it has the most power in your life, running roughshod over your dreams, creeping into every area of your life like a Kudzu vine without you noticing, choking off your creativity, suffocating your dreams, until you are paralyzed and unable to move forward. 9:36 - That is not how I’m going to live my life and it is not how you’re going to live your life either! We will acknowledge that we are afraid because once we do that, we can then face our fear and deal with it! 10:27 - You can’t face with your fear if you refuse to acknowledge that it exists. After that acknowledgement, it’s time to face your fear. If you are afraid of public speaking for instance, you might do this in baby steps to allow you to build your confidence. You might start small and build up to larger audiences. Taking small steps and getting those small wins will slow build your confidence and allow you to gain control over your fear. 13:10 - Attack your fears! If you on the offensive, fear has no choice but to retreat. 14:09
